Defining Moments

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. Marcel Proust

There are moments in life that change things forever. These moments can be filled with pain or result in triumph, but the ultimate result is that we’re left with a clearer definition of who we are. When examined in relation to our spiritual walk, these events can be called defining moments. We are enlightened and our direction, our goals, and our perspective become more focused.

We may end up changing direction and traveling down an entirely different road, or something we’ve been struggling with for the longest time becomes clear. Also, these occasions may not only have meaning just for us, but some changes will be so evident that others will notice them.

I had been wrestling with a problem that I felt required a lot of my mental attention. I was certain I had bitten off more than I could chew, but the Lord urged me to trust Him with it. He assured me that He was in control. Granted He had reminded me in the past, and on a certain level I believed this. However, it is never easy for us to give up control. God has been teaching me through these defining moments and character building exercises that His way is the only way. As I finally put the issue in His hand, I experienced the most profound peace.

As God took control, He showed me what part I was to play, the actions He wanted me to take, and that He would do the rest. God worked it out in ways that I couldn’t even imagine, and the result was better than anything I could have worried and wished into being. I thank the Lord that despite our stubbornness, He is ever willing to make things clear and define the path for our lives.
